Abstract
About the Site
Britannica Online is the online version of the legendary Encyclopædia Britannica, one of the oldest and most prestigious general-knowledge encyclopedias in the English language. The first of its kind to design a schedule of continuous revisions, it maintains a team of approximately 100 full-time editors in addition to 4,000 contributors, including 110 Nobel Prize winners and five American presidents. It features several thousand short, introductory articles of less than 750 words (known collectively as Micropædia) as well as long articles of at least two pages each (the Macropædia).
About the Organization
The original Encyclopædia Britannica was first published in 1768 in Scotland. Although it started out as a three-volume work, the continuous revisions and the expansion of human knowledge caused it to sharply grow in size. In 1994, the information contained began to be released on optical media. The last printed edition, published in 2010, comprised 32 volumes and over 18,000 pages, after which it was decided to continue releasing digital versions only.
