Abstract
The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) is an easily accessible database that provides reliable information on species names and their classifications. The initiative was born thanks to the sponsorship of the White House Subcommittee on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, after they identified systematics and ease of access to scientific nomenclature as a research priority. They partnered with Species 2000 and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. ITIS focuses mostly on North American species, but offers information about organisms all over the world as well.
